UNIT: Civil Rights and Protest (May 28-June 5, 2015)

This is our unit plan.  Under the unit plan is a brief outline of what we do in class each day.

I CAN...explain the political, economic & social goals, struggles and achievements of the Civil Rights Era.
I CAN...describe the sacrifices many made to gain rights for all Americans.
I CAN...identify racism that permeated ALL parts of America.
I CAN...analyze tensions in the U.S. caused directly or indirectly by the war in Vietnam.
I CAN...support multiple points of view of the war in Vietnam and of the anti-war protests in the U.S.

What is America’s responsibility for protecting oppressed people around the world?

Overview of the Movement
1. FOCUS:
   -Equality under the law AND making sure all laws are being
    ENFORCED
2. Important to know:
   -There was discrimination in both the South AND the North
   -The Civil Rights Movement didn’t start in the 1950’s and end in the   
     1960’s - it has been going on since the first European settlement
      and continues today.


Murder of Emmett Till - spark that started the contemporary Civil Rights Movement
1. Documentary clips & answer questions on the wkst (if absent, use THIS WEBSITE: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/till/ to complete the questions.
2. Large group discussion - significance of this event, the actions of Emmett Till’s mother & the outcome of the trial

6/3-6/5 Vietnam War Assignment
As you watch the documentary, write down examples from the video of TENSIONS/PROBLEMS caused directly or indirectly by the war in Vietnam (think about soldiers, families, protesters, students, faculty, companies, government, university staff, etc.)
HINTS:
-Overseas = soldiers (part of "Black Lions" regiment), upper "Brass", enemy (Viet Cong), families at  home
-At Home = college students (pro-war & anti-war), university officials, university professors, police officers, etc.
