| **DIRECTIONS FOR THE LEWIS & CLARK WEBQUEST ARE EXPLAINED HERE, NOT ON THE ACTUAL WORKSHEET!!!** 3. Start working on the Lewis & Clark webquest - follow the directions below to help complete the questions in the packet SECTION 1 Answer question on your own SECTION 2 Use this link and read the section entitled "Circa-1803"to fill out the chart SECTION 3 - Look at the pre-expedition map of the West in the Map Section of the PBS archive ("Soulard Map of the Missouri and Upper Mississippi, 1802" by William Clark) -Look also at "A New Map of North America from the Latest Discoveries" - this was created in 1778, right after the Declaration of Independence, that is from the University of Virginia Library's website. These maps show empty spaces in the middle of the continent, California as an huge peninsula and the Rocky Mountains as being much smaller than they really are. -Compare these two maps with the map of today (there is a map on the back page of your Lewis and Clark packet) and answer questions for Section 3 SECTION 4 -Use "The Route of the Corps of Discovery" map to find out where the expedition actually went. Trace the journey on your copy of the U.S. map (on the back of your Lewis & Clark packet) -Answer the questions for Section 4 SECTION 5: Right after section 4 (it isn't labeled) on the other side of the map -First, select ONE journal section (below) to read and after answer (a), (b) & (c) with three different entries from that journal section Select from;Corps first meeting with the Teton Sioux (September 24-28,1804) The portage around the Great Falls (June 4-July 4, 1805) Corps crossing of the Rocky Mountains (September 1-22, 1805) Corps confrontation with and retreat from the Blackfeet (July 25-28, 1806) -Label the map on the back of your packet: (1) On your map, label Louisiana Territory (2) On your map, label the travels of Lewis and Clark (3) On your map, label rivers, mountain ranges, states and modern day towns Lewis and Clark traveled (look back at Section 4 questions/answers for some help with this) (4) Create three symbols to represent places you read about in the journal entries you select - HINT: This interactive trail map may help. |
